Plot[]
Prologue[]
Quicktail's point of view.
Quicktail is running alongside Goldback, Duskback, Swingtail, and Flicktail as her band is chased by wolves. Quicktail curses the land for not having any trees for the band to climb as there are only rocks, grass, and shrubs around them. Quicktail recounts how she and her band were sent by another Strong Arm, Brightface, to raid goji bushes. Brightface had told Quicktail that the bushes were dripping with fruit and that she could easily please Brawnshanks and give her band more attention. Brightface had also told Quicktail not to wait for Nimbletail as she was sent on a mission by Crookedclaw. Quicktail sees a bamboo thicket in the distance as she and her band increase their speed and manage to climb to safety. The seven wolves stop by the base, and Quicktail notices that they look hungry. The wolves argue over who let the monkeys escape and complain of hunger. As the band continues deeper into the forest they reach an ashen clearing and land on the ground.
In the clearing, Crookedclaw and all the other Strong Arms wait for them. Quicktail asks why they are here but already knows that something must be wrong. Swingtail obliviously warns Crookedclaw of the wolves, but Crookedclaw tells him that she knows, and the Strong Arms laugh. Quicktail reflects on how it is no secret that Crookedclaw uses the Strong Arms and her spies to deal with monkeys believed to be a threat to Brawnshanks and the troop. She wonders what she and the band have done to be in trouble. As Crookedclaw signals for the Strong Arms to apprehend the band she asks for an explanation. Crookedclaw tells them that Nimbletail knew the price for helping the Dragon Speakers and that she still chose to help the pandas over her family. Quicktail tries to attack Crookedclaw but fails. She then tells Crookedclaw that Nimbletail isn’t a traitor and that whatever she did was for the Bamboo Kingdom. As Quicktail and her band are dragged away, she wonders in fear where they are taking them.
Chapter 1[]
Rain's point of view.
Rain and Ghost spot Lychee up ahead in the forest, and hide. She reveals that she and Ghost have been tracking Lychee for days to retrieve her stone, but now he doesn't have it. They tackle Lychee, who is shocked to see Rain alive, and quickly apologizes for being taken in by Brawnshanks' act. He asks for their help in getting rid of him. Rain demands his cooperation for dealing with Brawnshanks, and asks Lychee to show them his nest. Once there, Rain rolls around in Lychee's bedding to get his scent all over her fur, paints her eye markings with burned bark to make them look bigger, and practices his voice and his walk. Rain leaves for the Broken Forest in her disguise to get the stone.
Once she arrives, some of the Strong Arms mistake her for Lychee, and Rain, keeping up the act, brings a suggestion for Brawnshanks. Crookedclaw mocks her, thinking she's Lychee come to claim his power over the giant pandas, but a loud bang stops them. The monkeys go to investigate with Rain following, and find Brawnshanks and several other monkeys trying to throw water on an opening lava crack, following the advice Dasher gave them in the previous book. The lava bangs again inside the earth and kills Grabfinger, beginning to break through to the surface. Rain catches a glimpse of Brawnshanks holding both her stone and the fake one he mistook for Leaf's before they all scatter.
Chapter 2[]
Shiver's point of view.
Shiver walks along the crest of a hill with her siblings, Snowstorm and Frost. She tries to scent the air to check if the golden monkeys are following them but instead smells a familiar scent of hot and bad rocks. She asks her siblings about it and Frost compares the smell to the smoke from the Dragon Mountain. One of the pangolins that the snow leopards are escorting tells Shiver that the scent is from the sacred vent. Shiver recounts how she and her littermates were escorting the pangolins home after being imprisoned by the golden monkeys. She is also confused about how they managed to escape only remembering that Ghost’s speaker stone showed the way through the smoke and Leaf’s stone disguised Dasher and the pangolins. Swirling Storm tells the leopards that they are almost home, but Snowstorm asks if the pangolins will be safe at their home. The pangolins are unsure and hesitate at the question, but Snowstorm suggests that the leopards will stay with them to protect them from the monkeys.
The group climbs down a slope and reaches the pangolins’ home, a large flat rock shelf with steam from the sacred vent rising through the cracks. Swirling Storm says that the vents will tell them how to reunite the Great Dragon, but a sudden earthquake shakes the ground and a huge plume of smoke billows out of the rock spreading stones and dust. Shiver protects Circling Breeze and Spiral Moon, and sees Swirling Storm calling for help as he slips into a crack in the ground. Shiver saves Swirling Storm and the group watches the smoke pile into the air. Swirling Storm asks what has happened to the vent. In its place is revealed to be a massive crack in the ground. Spiral Moon peeks in and reports that the vent is gone, and with it, their connection to the Dragon. The pangolins wonder if the Dragon destroyed it, or if it's more of Brawnshanks' evil. Spiral Moon remembers another vent, and the Children ask the leopards to follow them there.
