Obsidian is a male sun bear and the father of Shale.

- Following the great flood, Obsidian and his family migrated north in search of a better home.
Creatures of the Flood[]
- When Obsidian and his family confront Shiver, Snowstorm, and Frost, Ghost rushes in the defend his adoptive littermates, and the sun bears recognize Ghost as a bear, so when the latter misidentifies himself as a fellow snow leopard, Obsidian corrects him by revealing that Ghost is, in fact, a bear, though neither Obsidian, nor his kin, know which kind. Nonetheless, the sun bears agree to spare the actual cubs of Winter for Ghost's sake, and wish the latter and his "siblings" luck. Although the snow leopards still do not believe that Ghost is a bear, Ghost realizes that he can no longer accept the idea that his bear-like features are anomalies, nor coincidental. Ghost observes his reflection in the sleet and mentally notes that he looks very much like the sun bears, and nothing like Winter, nor her actual cubs, Ghost realizes that he is, in fact, adopted. After Winter saves Ghost, that latter reveals to the former that he knows that he is not the cub of the former, or even the same species as Winter or their leap, based on what the sun bears told him and his "litter-mates". Winter does not deny this, and explains how Ghost came into her and her cubs' life. When Ghost asks his adoptive mother what species of bear he is, Winter explains that she has no more knowledge about this than the sun bears do.
