Pebble or Pebble Prosperhill was a male panda.
Pebble was best friends with Rain, but the pair had a falling out when Sunset Deepwood arrived and assumed leadership among their community. Like the rest of the Prosperhill pandas, excluding Rain, Pebble did not find anything amiss with Sunset, even after Rain pointed out the Dragon Speaker's offsetting behavior.
When Rain returned to the Prosperhill she and Peony unsuccessfully tried to warn Pebble and the others about Sunset. However, Sunset convinced Pebble and the other Prosperhills that Rain pretended to drown and fooled Peony into thinking otherwise. When Ghost returned from his latest mission, Pebble was shown to dislike Ghost due to the latter's perceived bloodlust. Pebble eventually saw the error of his ways after Dusk had been exposed. Although Rain forgave Pebble for his betrayal, they never had the opportunity to reconcile before Pebble was killed by Lychee within the following month.
History[]
Creatures of the Flood[]
- Pebble sides with Rain when the latter argues with Blossom on who gets to eat the bamboo cane that Rain picked. Pebble insists that, because Rain was the first bear to have her paws on the cane, her claim to it is legitimate. After Rain and Blossom finish arguing, Peony reminds Pebble and her daughter that they have chores to do, before leaving the duo to their devices. Rain pretends to receive a message from the Great Dragon, to convince two cubs, Frog and Fir, to do Pebble and Rain's chores. After Frog and Fir finish doing their chores, Pebble warns Rain that they will not be able to toy with Frog nor Fir forever, as eventually they'll be old enough to realize that both Rain was tricking them into doing their chores. Rain reassures Pebble that they can toy with Yew's cub once they are born. Following their confrontation with Brawnshanks, Pebble follows Rain to the river. There, he tells Rain that the golden monkey had a point when he stated that Bamboo Kingdom was better with a Dragon-Speaker to guide them. In response, Rain expresses her skepticism towards the idea of a Dragon Speaker. Pebble asks Rain if she does not believe in the Dragon Speaker. Rain responds that she is not sure, but does not care, as the Prosperhills were doing just fine, even though there was not a Dragon Speaker at the moment. The pandas are suddenly interrupted by their community's commotion so the two return to the Prosperhill to investigate. There, they find that Sunset Deepwood has returned to the Bamboo Kingdom. Pebble is overjoyed by the Dragon-Speaker's return telling Rain that everything will be great now that Sunset has returned.
- After Sunset calls for volunteers to seek out recruits for the Prosperhill community, Pebble and Blossom are among the Pandas to volunteer. Rain (Who has grown suspicious of Sunset's motives) chooses to participate in the mission in order to look out for her best friend. Rain is subsequently assigned to Pebble and Blossom's team. Following the trio's departure however, Rain and Pebble argue about Sunset's motives. Pebble is convinced that Sunset has everyone's best interests at heart but Rain still finds Sunset's demeanor off-putting and unsuccessfully tries to convince Pebble to see her point by citing not-so subtle yet suspicious behavior she'd notice in Sunset. Pebble remains unconvinced that Sunset could do anything wrong and tells Rain that even though she lost family she doesn't understand what it's like as her own father died prior to her birth. Rain argues that despite not having a chance to know her dad, she does understand what Pebble is going through and would be happy if Pebble's kin turned out be be alive and well. The problem is that Rain finds the idea that Pebble's mother and Stone still being alive too good to be true much to the dismay of the latter. Pebble then asks Rain why she volunteered for the mission at all if she distrusts the Dragon-Speaker. Rain mentally notes that it's so that she could protect Pebble but chooses not to tell Pebble that. Pebble then suggests that Rain can call it quits and return to the Prosperhill in which the latter does resulting in a strain in her relationship with Pebble. Back at the Prosperhill Sunset informs that Pebble and Blossom had returned from their scouting mission. Rain is shocked by this revelation as she expected Pebble and Blossom to be away for a longer period of time. Sunset explains that the reason why Pebble and Blossom returned as soon as they did was because they found a young male panda cub named Maple. Rain begins to wonder if Pebble was right about Sunset. After meeting Maple, Rain is still unsure if Sunset is trustworthy or not. However Rain knows that Pebble will find it even harder to believe that there's anything wrong with Sunset now that Maple had been found. Nonetheless Rain doesn't want to lose her friendship with Pebble, so she decides to apologize to the latter for his own sake if not Sunset's. However, Rain's attempt to reconcile is unsuccessful as Pebble refuses to accept the former's apology much to the dismay and frustration of Rain. Later Pebble informs Sunset that Rain is suspicious of the latter. When Sunset confronts Rain with what Pebble told him, Rain accuses Sunset of stealing Pebble from her. Unbeknownst to Pebble, Rain's suspicions are soon proven to be correct when Sunset attempts to drown her.
River of Secrets[]
- Rain tells Plum, Leaf, and Dasher how Sunset had fooled her neighbors in the Prosperhill, including Pebble.
- When Ghost takes part in a feast in the Prosperhill Clearing, Pebble introduces him to Rain whom Sunset claimed to have drowned when she supposedly tried to cross the river. Ghost reassures Pebble that Rain isn't to blame for her own "death" as she was only doing what she loved best when she was swept away. When several animals arrive at the Prosperhill to consult Sunset, Ghost finds the other pandas unnerved by the arrival of a manul cat. Ghost asks Pebble why the other pandas are so nervous. Pebble explains that Sunset was attacked by a clan of manuls following the flood.
- After Rain reunites with Peony, they confront Sunset and attempt to rally the other pandas including Pebble to their side. However, Sunset discredits the pair and Pebble continues to believe Sunset's lies even after Peony vouches for Rain. Pebble concludes that Rain faked her death as a twisted prank. Rain and Peony unsuccessfully try to convince him along with the other Prosperhills, that Rain never faked her death and Sunset is lying. However, none of their neighbors are able see reason.
- After Ghost returns from his mission to "assassinate" Pepper, Pebble reacts to Ghost's arrival in fear and recoils away from him.
Journey to the Dragon Mountain[]
- When Rain and Peony attempt to escape, they walk right into Pebble. After mulling over his decision, Pebble calls out to alert Sunset. Rain angrily pushes past him.
- Pebble, along with the rest of the Prosperhills, arrives to capture Rain, only to have her unmask "Sunset" as Dusk, leading him to switch sides.
- Later, Pebble announces the arrival of Leaf, Rain, and Ghost as Dragon Speakers.
The Dark Sun[]
- Pebble speaks with Leaf about Rain, worrying that she hasn't forgiven him, and he has feelings for her, but she may prefer Lychee. Leaf advises him to talk to her.
- Some time later, Pebble appears in the pool, dead with a bite mark on his neck. The other pandas blame Ghost and chase him away from the Prosperhill, including Rain, who later feels remorse for her deed and swears to find the real killer.
The Lightning Path[]
- Lychee, though unnamed, is tasked by Brawnshanks to murder Pebble, which he finally finds an opportunity to.
- Rain tries to get information about Pebble's death, but only finds that a panda killed him. After accusing Blossom and Ginseng, the two do not confess and expose their evidence: a glimpse of a white panda speaking the way Ghost does. Rain finds a pit of white chalk, leading her to believe that Pebble's killer framed Ghost. She deduces that Lychee did it, and accuses him, leading him to reveal that he did it for Brawnshanks. Infuriated, Rain attacks him, but he tries to drown her and escapes.
Personality[]
- Pebble is shown to be gullible to a fault. As he did not find anything amiss about "Sunset", even after Rain pointed out his offsetting behavior. This resulted into an unresolved argument that put a strain on their relationship. Pebble is shown to be willing to hold a grudge, as he refused to accept Rain's apology, after the latter attempted to reconcile with him. However he is distraught when Dusk tells him and the other Prosperhill Pandas that Rain drowned when she supposedly tried to cross the river. This shows that despite their conflict being unresolved he still cares for his friend. When Rain returns to the Prosperhill alive and well, Dusk causes even more damage to their relationship when he discredits her and Peony. Based on Dusk's lies, Pebble concludes that Rain pretended to drown as some twisted prank. Pebble was initially welcoming to Ghost when he and Shiver joined their community, but grows to dislike the latter when Dusk portrays Ghost as a bloodthirsty individual. However, Pebble becomes more friendly towards Ghost after realizing that he is the final triplet rather than the mindless brute Dusk made him out to be.
- When, Rain and Peony escape from the pit, Pebble realizes that "Sunset" had imprisoned and starved the pair, but instead of coming to his sense Pebble alerts “Sunset” of Rain and Peony’s escape. While "Sunset" is leading a search party, Pebble is shown to regret ratting his former neighbors out as he does not give out Rain’s location when he spots her submerged in the river. When "Sunset" is exposed as Dusk, Pebble stands up to Dusk by acknowledging that he and the other Prosperhills were wrong to trust him and is the first to side with Leaf and Rain.
Trivia[]
- Although Pebble's mother is stated to be dead in Creatures of the Flood, she also appears in said book.
