- "[...]Then, in the dark . . . the monster. The white monster. Muscles and teeth, white, like death, like a bear . . . It saw with the eyes of death. . . ."
- - Plum recounting her encounter with Ghost in Creatures of the Flood
Plum, also known as Plum Slenderwood and Plum Risingtree was a female panda, the sister of Orchid, and the aunt of Leaf, Rain, and Ghost. She was killed by Dusk after confronting him on the atrocities he committed.
Description[]
Plum had the typical black markings of her kind. Her eyes were brown,[citation needed] and she had three scars on her forehead.[citation needed]
History[]
Creatures of the Flood[]
- Plum takes care of her orphaned niece, Leaf, ever since Orchid left the cub with her. Plum is first seen at the Feast of Gray Light with Leaf and a few other pandas, reprimanding them for losing faith in the Dragon.
- Later, when food is running low, Plum scolds the other pandas again for not maintaining their faith. She volunteers to seek the Dragon alone at the Dragon Mountain and sets off that same day.
- On her journey, Plum runs into Ghost, who mistakenly attacks his aunt believing her to be a monster. During the fight, Ghost deals a severe blow to her forehead, and afterwards Leaf, Dasher, and Shadowhunter find her delirious with the wounds infected. Shadowhunter and Dasher come up with the proper herbs to cure her, and they find Rain along the way.
River of Secrets[]
- Plum asks Rain about life in the Prosperhill before they journey to Dragon Mountain.
- After escaping a landslide, Rain and Plum head back to the Northern Forest to seek out the other Slenderwood Pandas while Leaf and Dasher follow the bats. Back in the Northern Forest, Rain remains skeptical about her relationship to Plum so she leaves her aunt for the Propserhill but not before leaving behind some bamboo stalks for Plum.
- As the monkeys escort Ghost to a cave, the latter thinks about his encounter and subsequent fight with Plum (Unnamed). Ghost feels guilty about this because even though the other bear attacked him and Shiver first, Ghost understood that because he looked and smelled different from other Pandas, Plum had mistaken him for a threat. Ghost wonders if the wounds he inflicted on Plum were fatal and if he'd ever know before heading into the cave.
- When Ghost and Dusk engage on an expedition into the Northern Forest, they spot Plum on a boulder holding a bamboo stalk. Plum recognizes Ghost as her adversary and concludes that he and Sunset are conspiring. Plum confronts the pair and reveals that two of the prophesied triplets are her nieces who had been collected by Shadowhunter. Unbeknownst to Plum and Ghost however, Ghost is the final triplet of the prophecy. As Plum lunges for Sunset, Ghost intervenes and demands Plum to back off. As Plum retreats, Ghost tells Sunset about his history with Plum. Ghost acknowledges that while the scars on Plum's forehead were his doing, he didn't do it on purpose. Ghost explains that the reason why he scratched Plum was because he was also frightened by her presence.
- Soon after, Plum is found dead. Sunset blames Plum's death on Shadowhunter, Ghost however could tell that's not the case as he found that Plum's wounds were not consistent to those inflicted by a tiger. After Sunset orders Ghost to kill Pepper, the latter realizes that Sunset was responsible for Plum's death.
- As Rain and Peony are taken prisoner by Sunset and the monkeys, she recognizes Ghost as Plum's adversary and lambasts him for it.
