Sunset, or Sunset Deepwood, was a male panda, and the former Dragon Speaker of the Bamboo Kingdom.

Shortly before the flood, Sunset tragically lost his life to Dusk who went on to take his brother’s place.

Appearance[]

Sunset bore a strong resemblance to his twin brother, Dusk.

Personality and Traits[]

In contrast to his brother, Sunset was kindhearted, humble and kept a level head. He was reputed to be the wisest Dragonspeaker in the Bamboo Kingdom. When he received a prophecy of his upcoming doom and the forthcoming birth of the triplets, Sunset realized that Dusk was going to kill him and posed a major threat to his successors. Sunset warned Shadowhunter about his upcoming death, but didn’t tell him that his brother would be at fault. Instead, Sunset told Shadowhunter to find Orchid and look after the triplets. Despite knowing that he could not beat Dusk in their forthcoming duel, Sunset was unwilling to go down without a fight. When Dusk attacked him, Sunset put up a last stand which culminated in Dusk’s scar on his leg.

History[]

Creatures of the Flood[]

After a year of losing his life to Dusk, the latter arrives at the Southern Forest, pretending to be Sunset. Rain, who has never known Sunset, anticipates Dusk’s arrival with curiosity while the other pandas greet "Sunset" joyfully, unaware of his true identity. Dusk reigns over the Bamboo Kingdom using his brother's name.
Shadowhunter recalls his last meeting with Sunset, who informed him that triplets would take his place.

River of Secrets[]

As Leaf, Rain, Dasher and Plum climb Dragon Mountain, Plum asks if Rain was certain about Sunset's intentions, confused as she personally met the Dragon Speaker when she was a cub and stated he was kind and wise. Rain however is unconvinced as the other Prosperhills overlooked "Sunset's" suspicious behavior and believes that he had always been a con artist.
Dusk continues in his brother's position with no one, save Shiver, left to suspect him of foul play. When Ghost and Dusk run into Plum, the latter recognizes Ghost as her attacker but fails to recognize Dusk as Sunset’s brother. Plum accuses Ghost and “Sunset” of conspiring to harm her in the White Spine. During the confrontation, Plum reveals that her nieces are two of the triplets Dusk claimed were evil. Plum explains that "Sunset" is the bad guy and that her nieces along with their sibling are destined to stop him from causing anymore trouble.
After Dusk orders Ghost to eliminate Pepper, Ghost realizes that "Sunset" is not only a liar but at fault for Plum's death.

Journey to the Dragon Mountain[]

When Dusk confronts Brawnshanks, the latter uses the name "Sunset" mockingly, implying that he is aware of Dusk's identity.
While still imprisoned, Rain foresees Sunset drowning. After Rain reunites with Leaf, Rain tells her sister about the vision and Leaf escorts Rain to the Darkpool as it’s where Rain’s vision took place. There, Rain dives into the Darkpool and discovers Sunset’s skeleton. As Rain examines Sunset’s remains she foresees Sunset's confrontation with Dusk. Rain witnesses Sunset giving Dusk the scar on his leg before Dusk subsequently finishes his brother off. Rain realizes that the skeleton at the bottom of the pool is Sunset’s and that Dusk is her true enemy.
When Dusk and the Prosperhill Pandas arrive at the Darkpool, Rain exposes his true identity and reveals that Dusk killed Sunset Deepwood and lied about it. Dusk attempts to discredit Rain but his group is no longer fooled and end up siding with Rain and Leaf much to Dusk’s frustration and dismay. With his lies exposed, Dusk confesses to killing Sunset but instead of expressing remorse he justifies his actions by accusing the real Sunset of being weak for his refusal to subjugate the Bamboo Kingdom. Leaf argues that most pandas would rather use the Dragon’s wisdom, to guide the Kingdom rather than dominate it. After Leaf and Rain learn that Ghost is their brother, they inform him that Sunset died and Dusk had taken his place. Despite having no foreknowledge of Dusk’s true identity, Ghost isn’t surprised to learn that Dusk wasn’t Sunset as he already knew that Dusk wasn’t above resorting to murder to conceal his deception. After Dusk accuses Ghost of cowardice, Ghost calls out Dusk’s hypocrisy by stating that the latter is the true coward for assuming Sunset’s identity. When Shadowhunter confronts Dusk at The Dragon Mountain, he acknowledges the latter’s role in Sunset’s demise and winds up killing Dusk in retaliation.
